VASTU TIPS - HOME/FLAT

The architecture of our homes can damage our health, the air we breathe and the water we drink, without our even being aware of it. We all care about our homes and spend time, effort and money, trying to make them more comfortable. Similarly, at the places where we work, environmental stresses contribute to overall load, preventing us to reach our full potential. Resisting these external forces becomes more important for growth and development.
North-WestThe room in this direction is suitable for guests and girls.
South-WestThe Chief of the house should have his room in this direction.
North-EastNo bedroom should be situated in this direction. In such situation there is a possibility of increase number of girls in the family
South-EastNo bedroom should be located in this direction. The children do not take interest in studies. There is no sound sleep. People have much anger. Decisions are generally taken hurriedly.
Your Prayer Room:- Room for prayer and meditation is recommended to be in the north-east corner of the house. Deity or image of god should not face the south direction. Ideal positions are such that you face east or west while praying.
Bathroom: - Bathroom should constructed in the West and South directions and the flow of its drains should be towards North-East.

Toilet:Toilet should be constructed mainly towards South or West. Never build toilets in the direction of eastern corner ant the face should be towards soutrh or West while discharging stool.

Children's Room: - The children's room, should be constructed in the North-West corner.

Doors: - The doors should be in the North and East. When someone enters, the waves emerging from the doors affect his / her mind because the magnetic waves always flow around us.

Drawing Room:It should be in North-West, South or west direction. The furniture should be kept in South and West directions. Open space should be maximum in North and East directions.

Dining Room: - The dining room should be constructed in South-East.

General Room:
-Though, it is sparingly used; yet it should be constructed in the North-West.

Guest Room: - It should be in North-West corner.

Kitchen: -The kitchen must be situated in fire angle, i.e. in South-East. The face of the cook should be towards the East. The water tap in kitchen should be in the North-East direction. It is better if the stone on which food is cooked, is of red colour.

Study Room: - The North-East corner is best for a study room. If the study room and place of worship room are adjacent then it is considered most beneficial.

Water-Tank: - It is best to keep it in the North-West, but could be kept in West also.

VAASTU DIRECTIONS

As per the Vastu rules, while constructing a building it must be located in such a way that it receives the maximum benefit from the solar and cosmic energies. Thus the orientation attains a vital part. The various directions are:

North, South, East, West, NorthEast, NorthWest, SouthEast and SouthWest. Every corner is again divided into 2 sides. Namely:

NorthEast -East North EastNorth North East
SouthEast -East South EastSouth South East
NorthWest -West North WestNorth North West
SouthWest -South South West West South West

The NorthEast corner is stated to receive the cosmic energy, which is a combination of energy from different planets apart from sun, in abundance. And from there it moves in the opposite direction i.e to the SouthWest.

LAND SELECTION

While selecting a plot the following points should be observed:

Directions facing Northeast is over all good for home, factory and offices while Northwest is good for trading, business and industry. Southeast is good for chemical, petrochemical, or electric related business or industry and Southwest is good only for night time activities.
Four shapes of plots only recommended SQUARE, RECTANGULAR, SHERDAH (plot is wider in front then the back) and GAUMUKHI (means a plot is wider in back then the front)
The slope of the plot or land should be towards north and east.
Plot having road on one side at North and East direction is good for prosperity. If Plot having road on one side at West direction is good for name and fame and if plot having road on one side at South direction is good for business.
Plot facing two side road North & East directions is good for prosperity. If plot facing road East & South direction is good for females. The plot facing road South & West directions is average. The plot facing road West & North direction is good and the plot facing road North & South direction is average.
Plot facing three side road is weak plot. It can be improved by providing passage on fourth side.
Plot facing roads on all sides is the best plot.
Plots facing road with T-Junction are weak plot.
The plot at the end of the road is not a good plot.

VASTU TIPS - OFFICE / FACTORY

Tips For Office:

Money and valuables should be kept in an Almirah or safe facing north.
If north is blocked it can be cured with the help of regulators.
A boring or tube well in south is very harmful for finance.
A pit or under ground tank in south is also very harmful for finance. Certain pictures of god goddess and proper placement of mirrors brings financial gains in the house.
Water flowing from north to east is very good.
A water fountain in the north east part of the house or factory is very good.
An aquarium with 9 gold fish and one black fish, in the north east corner/portion of the house or factory is very good.

Tips For Factory:

The shape of the land, roads, uninterrupted availability of water and electric power etc. should be kept in mind.
According to 'Vastu Shastra' the main gate of factory should be kept in the East, North or North-East of the plot. All other doors can be kept in North-East, East, North or North-West.
The guardroom of the factory should be in North-West of the Northern gate and to the South-East of Eastern gate.
There must be open space in the North- East. The land of the factory should be elevated in South-West.
The store of the factory should be in the South-West.
The North-West corner should be used for car-parking.
The administrative block should either be in the North or in the East.

Directions in Vastu

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT COMPOUND WALL SHALL NOT BE CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE?

It is a wrong notion. The compound wall shall be constructed before hand, and then only the construction of the house shall be taken up. By doing so, the bad influence of environment will not fall on the house construction, as per standard works on vastu.

WHAT TYPE OF ENVIRONS WILL BADLY INFLUENCE?

Water tanks, wells and pits on southern, south-western, and western sides, elevated area, hillocks or mounds on eastern, north-eastern, and northern sides shall not be there. No burial ground, temple, slaughter house, pollution shall be in the close proximity of the proposed house. These types of environs will have bad influence on the proposed construction.

WHICH SHOULD BE THE DIRECTION FOR ENTERING INTO THE HOUSE?

From the compound wall gate as you enter shall go straight to the main entrance or you can enter into the main entrance located on the right side of the house. This is known as Savyagamanam (clock-wise direction). It is not correct to enter in Apasavya gamanam (anti-clock- wise direction) or from the back side of the house. If on the back side of the house also a road runs, and an entrance is provided then you can enter from the back side of the house also.

CAN SIMHADWARA-MAIN ENTRANCE BE FIXED EXACT OPPOSITE TO THE COMPOUND WALL GATE?

Yes. It shall be like that only. However the center point of compound wall gate and center point of simhadwara shall not be on a perpendicular line. The center point of simhadwara shall be slightly towards the right side of the house.

BASING ON THE ROAD DIRECTION, IN WHICH DIRECTION SIMHADWARA OR MAIN ENTRANCE SHALL BE FIXED?

1. If road is on eastern side, simhadwara or main entrance shall be to the east or south but should not be to the north. 2. If road is on southern side, simhadwara shall be fixed to the south or west but not to the east. 3. If road is on western side the simhadwara shall be to the west or north but not to the south. 4. If road is on northern side the simhadwara shall be to the north or east, but not to the west. If Simhadwara are located as above the entry will be savyagamanam (clock-wise).

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT THE THICKNESS AND THE HEIGHT OF THE WALLS ON NORTHERN, NORTH-EASTERN AND EASTERN SIDE SHALL BE LESS THAN THE OTHER SIDES?

If house is constructed as above it is against the rules of vastu sastra. In all directions the height and thickness of the walls shall be uniform. The present day pseudo vastu pundits are advising that north-east shall be lighter and south-west shall be heavier, which is against the basic principles of vastu. Such pundits are wrongly advising to construct the walls thicker and higher on the south western side. By doing so the strength of the house gets reduced and the defect will cause suffering to the owner.

SHOULD THE STAIR CASE NOT BE ON THE NORTH-EASTERN DIRECTION?

If anybody advises that the steps and stair case should not be on the north-eastern side, it is their own opinion but not the vastu rule. This is also a wrong advise of pseudo pundits. Vastu rules does not restrict the location of stair case.

SHOULD THE STAIR CASE BE LOCATED SO AS TO CLIMBUP ON SOUTH AND WEST DIRECTIONS AND CLIMB DOWN TOWARDS NORTH AND EAST?

This advise is also of modern pseudo pundits and hence need not be followed. Which ever direction is convenient that can be chosen for stair case. However such construction shall not be odd in the appearance and inconvenient to the people living there.

IS IT CORRECT TO CONSTRUCT A HOUSE ON TO THE SOUTHERN COMPOUND WALL WITHOUT LEAVING ANY OPEN SPACE ON SOUTHERN SIDE?

It is a major defect. If the house constructed without leaving open space on southern side or on south-west or on western side, as being advised by modern pundits, it becomes a major defect (dosha) as per vastu rules.

WHAT IS VASTU PADA ?

The length and width of the plot where you want to construct the house shall be divided into nine parts, and by drawing lines at those points will create 9x9=81 small squares or rectangles. These 81 squares or rectangles are called Vastu Padas. It is also called 'Ekaseeti' pada Vastu.

WHY VASTU PADA DIVISION SHOULD BE DONE?

Vastu Pada division is essential. By doing this division the following are the advantages:
1. We can arrive at the center pada (BrahmaSthana), of the plot.
2.Four directions South, East, North, West can be fixed with reference to the site.
3. It becomes easy to arrive at as to where Simhadwara shall be fixed.
4. It is easy to arrive at the open spaces to be left. All around equal to one Pada shall be left open i.e. 32 Padas plot shall be left open all around the house to be constructed.
5. It becomes easy to locate the points of Marma, Upamarma, Mahamarma in the plot. The horizontal, vertical lines and diagonal of the plot will join at some points, and these points are known as Marmasthanas. If these vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines are drawn on a paper it becomes east for identifying these points of Marmasthanas. In these Marmasthanas entrances, windows, beams and pillars shall not be erected. If erected the owner of the house will face many difficulties.

Some Facts Of Vastu

IS VASTU A SCIENCE OR DOGMA?

Some people say that they do not believe in Vastu and hence they do not follow it. It does mean that they do not know what Vastu is and how helpful it is.

WHAT DOES VASTU MEAN?

Vastu means a livable place or the materials. Earth is source for all the materials including the materials for construction of a house such as timber, stone, sand, metals etc., And also vastu deals with chariots, vehicles, boats, cots, chairs, tables, cupboards and the like. The vastu sastra tells how these are to be made in what shapes and in what measurements. Vastu sastra includes Civil Engineering, Architecture, Arts and Crafts. A plan is needed prior to construction of a house. The Vastu sastra tells which should be where in the plan. When that is the case, no body can say that vastu is Dogma. It is meaningless to say that one doesn't follow vastu, may be in a different name the principles are followed.

IF VASTU IS A SCIENCE, HOW DIFFERENT ADVISES ARE COMING FORTH FROM DIFFERENT PUNDITS? AND IN SOME CASES CONTRADICTING?

For every science some standard books are there. So is the case with vastu. The fundamental principles of vastu are the same. However some pundits of the recent days with half-read or un-read knowledge are publicising their own writings as vastu sastra and creating confusion among the people.

WHICH ARE THE AUTHENTIC BOOKS?

Manasaram, Viswa karma prakasika, Brihat samhita, Samaranga sutradharam, Aparajita purtcha vastu vidya, Silpa ratna, Maya vastu, Viswa karma vastu etc., are the standard works on vastu.

ARE THERE COLLEGES THAT TEACH VAST SASTRA?

Telugu University of Hyderabad has courses on vastu such as Post graduate course on Jyothirvastu, Certificate Diploma courses in Astrology, Vastu course in M.A. Telugu University, basing on the standard works have published their text books and lessons for their students.

WHAT IS THE USE WITH VASTU?

The influence of five elements, Earth, Water, Air, Light and Space, is great on human life. Similarly they are equally important in house construction. The vastu sastra tells the criteria in selecting a plot of land, the comforts and connivances to be incorporated in the plan and what care to be taken and what should be avoided for comfortable and peaceful living. The shape of the plot, the nature of the soil, influence of environs, flow direction of water, area of the house, construction of rooms for healthy and peaceful living, fixing up the four directions to the house, the beauty of the house as well the retention of the beauty of the houses in the row, the main entrance, main gate of the compound wall etc., are the important factors that are guided by vastu principles. It also says the favourable directions of the house for different people.

IS IT CORRECT THAT PLOTS WITH SOUTH AND WEST ROADS ARE NOT GOOD?

In any village or town roads and houses will be there in all four directions. All are good. No standard work on vastu did say that south and west roads to a plot are bad. The pseudo vast pundits created that myth. Even with common sense that village or town will have beauty when houses are there in all the four directions. The standard works say as to how a house is to be built according to its directions. In this science directions and corners have great importance and if they are wanted it is called `DIGMOODHAM' and is a `DOSHA' a defect.

WHAT IS DIGMOODHAM - HOW A PLOT WILL BE LACKING DIRECTION?

If we see with compass from the middle of a plot of land, four directions shall be to the four sides of the plot. The roads should not run to the four corner directions (Eesanyam- North-East, Aagneyam -South-East, Neiruti - South - West, Vayuvyam North-West). If roads run through corner directions the four directions south, north, east, west will be towards the corners of the plot. The plot of the land shall be square or rectangle and it should not be triangular, circular and other such odd shapes. If the corners of the plot extends it is bad.

IS IT CORRECT THE SAYING THAT EXTENDING OF NORTH-EAST IS ADVANTAGEOUS?

It is wrong to say that extending corner of North-East is good. This is also a creation of pseudo vastu pundits. If North-East extends the plot will be out of shape. What is told is that North-East extending by the size of a blackgram is auspicious. No corner should extend to make the plot out of shape.

SHOULD WE CONSTRUCT A HOUSE IN A PLOT WITH EXTENDED CORNERS?

No. It should not be constructed. If the plot is extended in corners such part of the plot shall be left out so as to make the plot square or rectangle before constructing a house. Such leftout areas shall be separate from the main house and they may be used for developing gardens, servant quarters or car garages.

IF THE ROADS RUN ON THE CORNER DIRECTIONS OF THE PLOT, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?

If the row beauty of the houses in the road are maintained it looks nice. In these plots East, West, South, North directions will be to the corners of the plot. In such cases while maintaining the row beauty the main entrance (Simhadwara) shall be ensured facing to any one of the directions, but shall not face to a corner direction (north-east, south-east, south-west, north-west). Ensuring the main entrance to any one of the directions, plan should be prepared in 'L' shape. Two such L shaped houses or one L shaped house shall be constructed. In plots, where roads run along the corner directions, it is difficult to divide the plot as per the Vastu Padas.

Vastu Engineering

The decision by University Grants Commission to introduce Vaastu as subject at degree/post graduate level, gives scope to unearth the unknown secrets of the ancient subject used by ancient Indian architects in building huge edifices standing and being preserved even today as monuments. We salute UGC. Unfortunately our great rationalists are at forefront to oppose.

Vaastu is a science of engineering of those days dealing with materials and land, method of construction, principles to be followed, and many other aspects of engineering and architecture. A scientist always takes from ancient writings that important matter and substance and some times ignore the adjectives and other poetic phrases. So also in Vaastu the useful and important matter shall be taken for the guidance and use in modern structures. Instead our rationalists want to reject lock, stock and barrel, which by itself is irrational. These rejecters of Vaastu heard a bit of superficial superstitious words about Vaastu and conclude that entire Vaastu is superstition and should be rejected in Toto. First they must read what is told in Vaastu, the standard works, and then come to a conclusion.

Vaastu is written by many ancient scholars under the names such as Maya Vaastu, Maanasara in 7 volumes, Viswakarma Vaastu, Brihat Samhita , Samarangana Sutradhara, Vaastu Ratnakara, etc. and some of them are available translated into English.

The Vaastu is divided in to three main parts/groups dealing with
1. Griha Vaastu -towns,villages and buildings
2. Sayana Vaastu- Furniture, tools and utensils and
3. Yaana Vaastu- Vehicles and carts.

In Griha Vaastu it is dealt in detail as to how the town/village is to be designed, how much land to be taken for developing town/village, how the roads shall be laid, their directions, individual houses, courts, theatres, guesthouses, temples, palaces, armory, Administrative buildings, ministerial houses, court rooms etc. in the construction what size of brick or stone is to be used, what should be the size of rooms and for such rooms/halls what should be the height and thickness of walls, the ratio between them, how and what type of roof is to be laid, where the entrances shall be for different uses, what type of materials such as wood etc to be used, when the wood is to be cut, whether two types of wood can be joined for one purpose and so on so forth.
Sayana Vaastu deals with the furniture such as king's throne, cots, chairs, and tables, boxes for holding material, jewels, and clothes, and many other needed things of day to day by ordinary man, by king, by VIPs etc. Even in the furniture what are measurements for different purposes, what type of wood or metal shall be used, when the wood is to be cut, what type tree is to be selected, a tree with lot of bird nests to be avoided as there is a possibility of white ants eating tree inside, also an environmentalist point of view, and many other considerations.
Yaana Vaastu deals with chariots for king, war lords, carts for common man, farmer and their design, strength, materials to be used and all and sundry connected to their building.
While this all the matter the Vaastu contains, our rationalist without going through the standard books and with only hearsay of small bits of superstition, the great Indian rationalist wants to condemn the Vaastu calling it a mad dog. A foreigner is better at least he wants to read and see what is told in it and make a research and use what good is told in those ancient books.
One can condemn where Vaastu is wrongly interpreted or wrongly used. It cannot be called wise or rationalism if any body wants to throw everything into dustbin. To make it palatable to rationalists, first the name should be changed and an English word be given instead of Vaastu. If any body argues irrationally in the name of rationalism, the society throws such irrational rationalist into a dustbin and one should be wise enough not to encounter such situation.

Introduction Of Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra or Edifice Science unifies the science, art, astronomy and astrology, it can also be said as an ancient mystic science for designing and building. Vastu Shastra is a part of Sthapatya Vedaa and Atharva Veda. Vastu Shastra helps us to make our lives better and will secure from things going wrong. Vastu is a part of Vedas, which are believed to be four to five thousand years old. The art of Vastu originates in the Stapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda.

Vaastu Shastra is the sublime elucidation of your surrounding and their influence on your life. Vastu literally means " house" or Dwelling Place and its principles establish to create a harmony between the fine elements viz. Earth, Sky, Fire, Water and Air in the environment. Our ancient sages have applied their vastu knowledge and judgment to mitigate the negative functioning of our environment and increase the advantageous effect that it can have on our life. Indisputably, Vastu is an essential part of astrology, it takes into consideration not only physical / corporeal success but also mental calmness & tranquility.
